What you need to know to choose the right camper for you
Hiring a camper in New Zealand can be a daunting task that opens up a lot of questions; What is self containment? How early in advance should I book? Which insurance should I choose? to name a few. We've put together a little guide to hopefully put your mind at ease.
How far in advance should you book?
The earlier the better, especially if you’re travelling between December and February. Peak summer season sees availability drop fast across the country, with our most popular models; the MAD TRACKER and MAD EXPLORER being the first to go.
New Zealand’s summers are short and popular. International visitors, domestic travellers and students tend to hit the road around the same time. This means availability tightens up quickly from October onward. If you’ve got your heart set on a particular camper, reaching out three to six months in advance gives you the best shot!
Outside peak season, you've got more room. Both the shoulder months and winter tend to have better availability and less people at the most popular destinations.
Can I do a one way hire?
Absolutely! A one way hire is a great option if you want to see the whole country without doubling back. The classic route picks up in Auckland, works down to Wellington, crosses to the South Island and returns in Christchurch.
How the fee works
Christchurch to Auckland incurs no additional fee. Auckland to Christchurch involves a $400 one way fee. If your route is flexible, starting in Christchurch and finishing in Auckland is the cheaper direction.
If we need a van moved to one of our other locations, we’ll list it on the relocation page on our website. We tend to offer relocations at heavily discounted rates for a set period, after which you can extend the hire at standard rates.
Crossing the Cook Strait
You'll need to book a ferry crossing separately for the vehicle and driver. Ferries get super busy in peak season, so it's best to book this as early as the campervan itself.
Planning your route
A one way trip typically takes two to three weeks if you want time to stop and explore rather than just drive. This should give you plenty of time to see as much as you want, and save you driving hours upon hours each day.

A few small things can make a big difference to your trip, from understanding things like self containment and your insurance policy to knowing what to expect on New Zealand's "unique" roads.
Check whether your van is self contained
Renting a self contained camper allows you to make use of New Zealands beautiful freedom camping sites. In other words, it unlocks a freedom inaccessible by non self contained vehicles. Moreso, self containment allows for real independence and autonomy on your trip. You have everything you need with you at all times, and you’re able to sleep amongst breathtaking landscapes for free! Our MAD TRACKER, MAD EXPLORER, MAD2+ and NoMAD are all fully self contained and compliant with the new rules as of June 2026!

Understanding different insurance options is incredibly important and often overlooked. Whether it’s third party or through us, it’s worth knowing what your excess is, whether you have a bond, what’s covered and what isn’t. You can have a look at our insurance options here.
New Zealand Roads
Aotearoa has famously unpredictable roads, one minute you're flying it on fresh tarmac, the next you're curving through a hairpin bend on a gravel track. Not only that, but there are plenty of road rules and signs you may not be used to or aware of. No need to worry, we work closely with the RVA (Rental Vehicle Association) to ensure all of our travellers are aware and ready for driving in New Zealand. ds link
Terms and conditions
Yes, we recommend reading the thing no one wants to read. Jokes aside, it can be really helpful to know as much as you can about cancellation policies, exceptions to your insurance, where you can and can't go etc.
Driver and licence requirements
If you're hoping to take out the MAD EXPLORER, MAD2+, MAD ADVENTURER, NoMAD, or Car Rental, you need to be 18+ and hold a full valid drivers licence equivalent to a New Zealand class 1! The MAD TRACKER has the same license requirements, but you must be 21+.
If your licence isn't in English or doesn't have an English translation, you'll need to apply for an accredited translation or apply for an international driving licence. To see if you'll need one, please click here.
Road User Charge (RUC)
In New Zealand, diesel isn't taxed at the pump. This is part of an initiative to support farmers and maritime workers - only vehicles that use the road are subject to this tax. When you come to drop off your camper, we'll see how many kilometers you've covered and work out your RUC. It's currently sitting at $8 per 100km, however this is subject to change.
What's included in your camper
To ensure you've got all the basics, we provide you with a full bedding kit, kitchen utensils (including soaps and cooking oil), towels, a bathmat, a kettle and coffee plunger.
All of our campers are fitted with house batteries and include unlimited kilometers, 24-hour roadside assistance and nationwide mechanical breakdown insurance.
