New Zealand’s natural beauty is second to none. Both the people and the Department of Conservation work incredibly hard to care for this magical landscape.
Understandably, with the vast number of campers out on the road, challenges have risen around sustainability. From the beautifully maintained DOC sites to the updated freedom camping act, nationwide efforts are being made to reduce the negative impacts of freedom camping. To do our part, we have designed our vehicles to support travellers on their mission to leave no trace. We also work closely with Trees That Count, a not-for-profit dedicated to enabling native forest restoration.

The Tiaki Promise
The Te Ao Māori word “Tiaki” means to care for, look after, and protect. It represents the deep connection between Kiwis and the beauty of their country. The Tiaki Promise encourages visitors to travel thoughtfully, respect the whenua (land), protect our taonga (treasures), and leave Aotearoa (New Zealand) better than they found it.
What you can do to help
By renting a self-contained van for your trip, you’re already doing something. Your waste becomes your responsibility, so blackwater and greywater should only be disposed of at a dump station. Sorting recycling, avoiding litter, reducing food waste, and cleaning footwear between regions all help protect New Zealand’s landscapes, waterways, forests, and native species.
Enjoy local produce
Choosing local products and experiences supports the people and places of Aotearoa, reduces the impacts associated with imported goods, and helps travellers engage more meaningfully with New Zealand’s communities and culture.
What we do to help
As a company that leases vehicles, we understand our responsibility to reduce and offset our footprint. The MAD TRACKER, MAD EXPLORER, and MAD2+ are fitted with solar, and we are moving toward more AdBlue vehicles across the fleet for greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions. We also support circular habits at our depots, including our Pass It On Shelf, tyre recycling through Tyrewise, and careful rubbish sorting.
Trees That Count
We’ve partnered with Trees That Count, a national conservation platform that connects individuals, businesses, and community groups to help fund and plant native trees across Aotearoa.
Updated Self Containment Act
New Zealand’s updated self-containment legislation is a positive step toward protecting the natural places that make freedom camping so special. Stronger standards for self-contained vehicles and responsible waste management help ensure campers can continue enjoying the country’s incredible landscapes while minimising their environmental footprint.
