Mad Campers Is Now in Coromandel: Ferry, Cars and Scooters

Everything You Need to Know About Getting to Coromandel Town and Getting Around This Summer

Summer in Coromandel just got a lot easier. From Labour Weekend, Mad Campers is opening a depot in Coromandel Town, and we have teamed up with Explore Group so you can leave the car at home, cross the Hauraki Gulf by ferry and have your wheels waiting on the other side.

Here is how it all works.

1. The Ferry from Auckland

Explore Group is running ferries from Auckland’s Viaduct to Hannaford’s Wharf, near Coromandel Town, from Labour Weekend until Easter. Until the end of November, sailings run Friday to Monday, and from December they go daily. It is a scenic cruise across the Hauraki Gulf, with no traffic around the Firth of Thames and no long drive after a week of work. You book the ferry directly with Explore Group.

2. Add Our Free Shuttle

Hannaford’s Wharf is a short drive from Coromandel Town, and that is where we come in. Mad Campers runs shuttles between the wharf and town, so when you book your ferry ticket, simply add the free shuttle option. We will get you into town when you arrive and back to the wharf for your return sailing.

3. Hire a Car to Explore Further Afield

Once you are in town, collect your wheels from our Coromandel depot located at James & Turner (131 Kapanga Road, Coromandel). Our hire cars start from $90 per day and can be taken around Coromandel Town and well beyond, so the beaches, walks and villages across the peninsula are all within reach. If you want to see the east coast, a car is the way to go.

4. Or Grab a Scooter for Town

If you are staying put in Coromandel Town, our Suzuki 49cc scooters are $80 per day and a fun, easy way to get around. They are single rider only (no passengers) and are for getting around Coromandel Town. If you want to go further, choose a car instead.

5. Backed by Thames-Coromandel District Council

We are proud to partner with Thames-Coromandel District Council to provide the shuttle, hire cars and scooters for visitors over summer. It means more people can explore the peninsula easily, without needing to bring a car across on the ferry.

The Bottom Line

Ferry across, shuttle into town, wheels at the depot. That is a Coromandel holiday without the traffic. We are open from Labour Weekend until Easter.

Ready to plan your trip? Book your car or scooter with Mad Campers and add the free shuttle when you book your ferry.
